Forgive us our trespassing…

With four speaking children my day is filled with listening to tattling. Usually it is the same story, different verses of so-and-so is not being nice to me. So today when Isaac rushed in from outside declaring, “Gabriel’s trespassing!” it was like a breath of fresh air. Gabriel had briefly wandered into our neighbors’ yard when outside playing.  We have emphasized the importance of respecting other people’s things and specifically staying out of the neighbors’ yards unless invited, though I believe the terminology came not from our instruction, but from the children’s version of Pilgrim’s Progress where Christian and Hopeful trespass in Giant Despair’s kingdom. Obviously though, its meaning is clear in Isaac’s mind and Gabriel, my little trespasser, soon appeared again at our front door without facing the same fate as Christian and Hopeful.
