Today we ventured off to my parents’ house in Kentucky. The boys have been very excited about our trip south and have been counting down for weeks. Yesterday was spent cleaning and packing, including the exciting process of packing the snack bags and putting them into their backpacks. Gabriel was especially excited about this and after getting all of his snacks securely packed away he wore his backpack the remainder of the day.
My goal was to get on the road by 5:00. I was awakened at 3:30 by Gabriel asking if it was morning yet. I couldn’t get back to sleep so I got up and got ready and we managed to leave by 4:50. Among the snacks in their bags was small light sabers filled with M&Ms given by the neighbors for Easter. It was of course dark when we left and Jack discovered they made terrific flash lights, though I have to admit seeing a blue light in the rearview mirror made my heart miss a few beats a couple of times. We made the 12 hour trip in record time, stopping only three times for gas, food, and bathroom breaks. The boys wanted happy meals since the toy was a Green Lantern toy, so we struck a deal–I’d splurge for happy meals if they would eat in the car so I could keep driving.
It was a long trip and involved listening to 5 Dr Seuss stories on cd twice, all of Chitty Chitty Bang Bang, and 22 chapters of Swiss Family Robinson. We arrived to my parents in time to watch a bee keeper collect the bees that had decided to nest in their crab apple tree with a bee vacuum.
