This year Gabriel’s birthday fell on a Saturday, so it was in many ways a quieter and less busy day than some birthdays. Having eaten monkey bread yesterday, today we had blueberry muffins and fruit for breakfast and then Gabriel accompanied me to the farmer’s market for eggs and a few vegetables. He got to enjoy a few samples and they even had samples of banana cake with maple icing instead of the usual popcorn samples. He generously used his own spending money to buy honey straws for each of his brothers. They have taken to calling these “sucking straws.” They are like pixie stix, but filled with honey. Once we returned home he opened his presents. Isaac had told me the day before that Gabriel’s birthday was going to be much more exciting this year than previous years. The reason? You guessed it–Legos. Gabriel really likes “little legos” as he calls them, though he hasn’t really mastered following the directions to build the sets. Perhaps this is the reason that after opening them he announced he was going to wait until Sebastian went down for his nap before opening them, which to the older boys unhappiness doesn’t occur usually until after lunch. They managed mostly to stay busy until the appointed time. I built one set for Gabriel with his assistance and then turned him over to the capable hands of his brothers. Tonight he went to bed listening to his new Bible on his new cd player.
We enjoyed our second ice cream cake for the week. He chose Cookie Monster to top his cake. I told him was appropriate since the ice cream was Oreo ice cream and he thought that was very funny. He took delight in telling everyone he talked to that he is now four.
Happy birthday, Gabriel. You are full of fun and bring so many smiles to my face. I love to take your picture and have you ask, “Did you get my smile?” You have always had a mischievous glint in your eye and you love to tease, but you are also so sweet. It has been fun these last few months to watch you care for Sebastian more and more, to try to make him laugh and comfort him when he’s sad (though sometimes he is sad because you are giving him a little too much attention!) In spite of your love for jokes you are a thinker, and you have given me many lessons to think on with your simple love and faith. I love you so much and I am grateful every day that you are here with us. May this year be full of fun and learning and growing for you and may God give you delight in the world and people around you.
